Lydia McCoy - 2001 Hampton University Short Course & Summer 2001
I don’t remember the first time I picked up a pen,but I do know that nine out of 10 times,I have one in my hand. My name is Lydia McCoy and I am currently a rising senior at Hampton University. My major is mass media arts with an emphasis in print journalism. I am originally from Little Rock,Ark.,and graduated from the historic Little Rock Central High School, where nine students were denied entrance into the school after the overturned verdict of the "separate but equal" doctrine.
After this summer of interning with the Scripps Howard Foundation Newswire, and participating in the Scripps Howard Foundation short course,I will serve as the editor-in-chief of the Hampton Script,Hampton University’s school newspaper.
I have worked with the Script going into three years now and last year I served as the associate editor of the paper. Through my years in working on the paper I have come to understand the importance and the struggles that a journalist can have to make sure that the story is told.
In addition to this internship and my work with the Script,I interned with the Little Rock School District Communications Department where I was in the center of all the media happenings - - from television to print to advertising that took place within the district.
After I have worked in the newspaper business for a few years,my dream and ultimate goal is to start my own magazine. My love of writing and my respect for the profession of journalism will take me to my ultimate dream and allow me to put a pen into the hands of those who will come after me.
