The Scripps Howard Foundation started in 1962 as a small organization dedicated to “improving journalism.” Today, resources have expanded but so has the mission.
The foundation invests in programs that will equip student journalists to deal with their own futures, including the Semester in Washington program, internship grants, the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University, the Roy. W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition, the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University and the Scripps College of Communication, initiatives in Hispanic journalism and quality programs for mid-career journalists.
The foundation also invests in charitable organizations in Greater Cincinnati and in Scripps communities that improve quality of life to assure a brighter future to all Americans.
The Scripps Howard Foundation strives to advance the cause of a free press through support of excellence in journalism, quality journalism education and professional development. The Foundation helps build healthy communities and improve the quality of life through support of sound educational programs, strong families, vital social services, enriching arts and culture, and inclusive civic affairs, with a special commitment to the communities in which the Company does business.
