WASHINGTON – The temperature was near 90 degrees Thursday, but the heat didn't keep hundreds of people from huddling around a kitchen stage in a tent to watch celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse perform.
Lagasse was one of the main attractions at the food-themed part of the Smithsonian Institution's Folklife Festival.
“There has never been this many people to see a food demonstration here,” said Stephen Kidd, co-curator at the event. “Emeril's a rock star.”
The theme of this year's food exhibit, called Food Culture USA, is the connection between food and culture and how the two evolve together. Other exhibits included coffee makers from Tanzania and Thai chefs, whose food had a Mississippi influence.
