I am a senior at Ohio University. For three years, I have worked on the air and in the newsroom for Ohio University Public Radio. In that time I have learned radio is as much performance as it is journalism. To be good at both, you must have a talent for calmly reading to thousands of listeners a piece of copy that was just handed to you. And you must finish reading it in time.
More recently I worked as a copyeditor for The Post, the daily, independent newspaper at Ohio University. Most people think it’s sick, but I find the challenges of copyediting - processing stories quickly, writing headlines and trimming muddled sentences - particularly rewarding. I am looking forward to all the writing and reporting opportunities I will have in Washington.
I don’t know if I’ll be working at a newspaper or a radio station when I graduate. I don’t know if I’ll be working in this country or overseas. I do know that I’d like to write stories that change the way readers or listeners view the world.
I watch movies and read books in my free time, and when I’m feeling particularly ambitious, I teach myself a couple of songs on my bass.
