Ilana E. Strauss - spring 2010

Whenever I'm asked to describe myself, the first thing that comes to mind is corn. Not that I particularly like the stuff, unless it's popped, of course. It's just that I'm from Illinois, the corn capital of the world, as far as anyone in the state is concerned, and so any attempt to describe Deerfield, my hometown, always comes back to corn.

Despite being surrounded by farmlands in the breadbasket of the country, I've always wanted to broaden my horizons, which is part of the reason I'm interested in journalism. I've traveled to Holland, Israel, Spain, Mexico, Ecuador and Sweden. I've lived in a variety of overseas conditions, from a new hotel in Stockholm to a youth hostel in an ancient section of Jerusalem.

I've reported for the Jerusalem Post, The Daily Illini and The 217.com, an online campus magazine. I've also written stories for The Deerfield Review and JVibe, an online Jewish teen magazine. I've covered a wide range of news, including the Tehran protests, cupcake enterprises, Darfur Rallies, films and art exhibits.

In addition to writing, I enjoy drawing, graphic design and using all kinds of artistic mediums. Merging this interest with journalism, I have drawn political cartoons and caricatures for most papers and magazine I've worked for.
