Vivi Hoang- Summer 1999

I learned about the sly grip of writing in middle school when my teacher had us write alternate endings to short stories we'd read. When I read my work to my classmates, I loved hearing their chuckles and seeing the slightly perplexed expression on my teacher's face. And I've been hooked on writing ever since. I'm now a magazine journalism major at the University of Texas at Austin graduating May 2000. This past school year I was a features writer for the my school's daily newspaper, The Daily Texan, and a staff writer for the UT yearbook, The Cactus. Music has always been a big part of my life--I've played the viola and piano for ten years and continue to play in my school orchestra. Outside of that, I participate in karate--I'm currently a lowly orange belt, but determined to work my way up. After graduating, I hope to write for a magazine that focuses on any of my interests, which includes literature, entertainment, travel, comic books, Japanese animation, and music. Although I'm a Texan by birth, I enjoy traveling around with my family on road trips around the United States. I love the open road and its sense of freedom.
