Caroline E. Ruse - Fall 2006
Caroline E. RuseFor a Georgia Bulldogs fan, there are few things worth doing if they require missing football season in Athens, Ga. But this fall, the Dawgs will find they’re minus one screaming fan between the hedges of Sanford Stadium, because this internship was definitely one of those few things.
I am a junior at the University of Georgia majoring in newspapers and minoring in Spanish.
I first became interested in reporting when I went to my hometown paper, the Gwinnett Daily Post, and told them I wanted to write. I had never written a newspaper article before in my life, but they were wonderful enough to hire me, and I spent last summer there as a features intern.
I held reporting and editing positions in the features section of my campus newspaper, the Red & Black, and this summer I tried my hand in the news side of reporting at the Erie Times-News in Erie, Pa.
I can’t emphasize enough how thankful a Southern girl felt to be up north in the summertime instead of the winter – I’ve never seen more than a couple inches of snow at a time. But it was a learning experience nonetheless. When I wore jewelry displaying UGA’s symbolic “G,” people asked me if I was Green Bay Packers fan. So now I’m learning to get around in another new place, and I hope I have just as many experiences that will become really entertaining stories for my friends down home.
