Mat Herron - Summer 1999

The vitals: I'm 20 years old, originally from Louisville, Ky., which is known for the Fastest Two Minutes in Sports and a stellar Ohio river walk (not that there's any competition in that area).
  • Education: I'll be a journalism and sociology senior at the University of Kentucky next fall by years, not by credits.
  • Journalism mumbo-jumbo: Editor of the Kentucky Kernel, UK's independent daily student newspaper, August '98-May' 99; reporting intern at the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader, summer '98, copy editor, spring '98; general assignment reporter at the Kentucky Post in Covington, Ky., summer '97; and at the St. Matthews Voice-Tribune in Louisville, Ky., summer '96. Freelancer for Student.com, Cambridge, Mass., January '98 to May '99.
  • Other background: I like Mexican and Italian food. I have never been to Europe or California, but I'm hoping to change that in the next year or so.
  • Hobbies: Watching movies, playing guitar, reading. Watching more movies, playing more guitar.
  • Favorite actor: Sean Connery, (especially the Bond years).
  • Favorite actresses: Sandra Bullock, Catherine Zeta-Jones.
  • Favorite books: In Cold Blood, On the Road.
  • Favorite band: Pearl Jam
  • Favorite show: Fugazi at the Congress Theater in Chicago, May 1998.
  • Little-known fact: Played drums in a hardcore band for six years. Have recently switched to guitar in an effort to pick up more dates.
  • Sign: Cancer.
  • Ambition: To be a political and/or urban affairs writer for a wire service or newspaper, and eventually become a foreign correspondent.
