Danyelle Gary - 2011 Short Course

I am a rising senior at Hampton University in Hampton, Va., and will graduate in May 2012 with a major in print journalism and a minor in marketing.

In my mind, success is inevitable and nothing will stand in my way because my heart is in journalism.

I don’t have dreams, I have goals. One day I will own my own publication geared toward the encouragement and empowerment of African American girls, but until then, I see every opportunity I am given as a stepping stone.

For the past year, I have freelanced for The Informer and the Sun News, which are a monthly and weekly newspaper in my hometown, Macon, Ga. Since my freshman year, I have worked as a staff writer for the Hampton Script. As a junior, I served as editor of the features section. As a senior, I now hold the associate editor position. Each day, I dedicate hours of my time to talk to writers, edit content and writing my own stories to produce a quality publication.

I have served as the media intern for S.E.E.D.S. Global Enterprises, a new organization in my home city that works to develop leaders through organizational and community empowerment. I worked with everything media related, including editing and updating blog posts and creating and managing the organization’s Facebook and Twitter accounts. Over the summer, I will work as a multimedia intern for the Augusta Chronicle in Augusta, Ga.

I have realized that to improve as a writer and a reporter I must work, and as a SHFW intern, I am ready and willing to learn.

The Taxus floridana, or Florida yew, a small tree with flat needle-like leaves and a bushy appearance, is also endangered.
